The storm's maximum sustained winds early Monday are near 40 mph (65 kph). The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says some strengthening is expected and the storm could become a hurricane by Tuesday night or Wednesday.
Cosme is centered about 435 miles (695 kilometers) south of Manzanillo, Mexico, and is moving northwest near 10 mph (17 kph).
